Many new hairdressers initially think that “hairdressing chair” refers only to one type, but in practice most salons need both for each station. If you confuse the two and, for example, buy only a salon stool for the station, the client ends up sitting in a chair that was never intended for that purpose, which is rarely a comfortable experience.
Pump chair is another term for styling chair. The name comes from the pump beneath the seat, which makes it easy to adjust the sitting height accurately with a pedal, without having to lift or twist yourself to help the client up or down. A saddle stool typically falls somewhere in between, as it has fewer moving parts than a styling chair but a more specialised seat than a regular salon stool. It depends on how you work and how much space you have between the stations. Wheels make it easy to manoeuvre around the client and move the chair when cleaning, which is an advantage in most salons, especially if you move around a lot yourself during a haircut.
